Topiary Tube

Project Brief

The challenge was to Create a non-screen-based outcome to serve the needs of a specific people group, driven by an activity-centered approach to design. My target audience was young adults who are interested in topiary (clipping shrubs/trees/etc to form shapes), like 60s aesthetics, and value protecting the environment.

Solution

With my target market in mind, I designed a kit that would allow consumers to create their own topiary. The kit includes all of the materials necessary to start and maintain topiary.

Booklet

The kit includes a simple instructions manual on topiary. The manual is made up of numbered circular pages with instructions.

Tags

Tags on each material in the kit are also numbered and use the same graphic pattern as their respective page in the manual to make the instructions more intuitive to use.

Final Applications

Since the target market values protecting the environment, I created minimal-waste packaging. The tube, as a whole, is durable and can store all of the materials while not in use. The gravel was the only material that required additional packaging to contain so I made the bag out of burlap, which can be reused as a ground covering when the topiary is transferred from pot to earth to prevent weeds from growing.

App Design

Expanding, I designed an app which extends the Topiary Tube’s functionality. The app allows topiary lovers to learn more, connect with others, and keep track of the care of their own plants.
